My college degree is in journalism (Go Rutgers!), and in spite of having spent most of my career in public relations, that training in news has always been at the core of my work. I read this morning that Marlene Sanders has passed away at the age of 84.
Sanders broke ground for women in television journalism, one of the first to cover a war when she reported from the field in Vietnam, she sat at the anchor desk of network news, and moved into management where she was named a director of documentaries. An Emmy award winner, she held her own against some of the biggest male names in the field, and keenly felt the limitations of the glass ceiling on the management side of news.
I’m grateful for women like her who opened doors and bravely stepped through them, so I, and my female colleagues, could follow.
RIP Marlene Sanders
